A NEW LOOK at an OLD SAYING!

---I’m sure that you all heard about the grass ALWAYS being greener in the other fellow’s yard. I heard a new version of that with same beginning, but with this addition - ‘’try watering your own grass and see how green IT WILL GET.’’

---We can see that if we maximize what we do have it may rival that which you see in someone else’s possession. You would have to reassess the situation…at the very least. The truth that I do see is that we are usually quick to compare what we have, with our neighbor. But, with the addition it shows how we are quick to judge ourselves WITHOUT having ALL the evidence. 

---We usually do not know what our potential is because we can be so busy sticking our nose into the affairs of others. It is NOT usually about doing our best work, but being sure that we are ‘’keeping up with the Joneses.’’

---At a time of global warming and the drought situation, we can be glad that the saying isn’t just about lawns of grass. It really is about maximizing who we are. AND…what better way to start than to accept yourself ‘’as you are.’’ Accepting yourself…faults and all…is far better than waiting until you feel acceptable + perfect. Because, as I’m sure you know…you MAY wait forever. Take Care.

ROBERT SAPOLSKY - Baboon Hierarchies and Stress!


Here is a wonderful 10 minute film by Robert Sapolsky from Stanford that compares the STRESS LEVELS of modern man with the daily grind of a baboon on the Serengeti in Africa. A disaster removes the Alpha Males from the society leaving the tribe to carry on with regular males and females. The tribe continues and does remarkedly better working as a Matriarch than as a Patriarch. Very eye opening!

A PREAMBLE


---We the people of Laguna Honda (staff, residents and volunteers) in order to give the taxpayer his fair shake in all-of-this provides that we will all do the best job possible to create a therapeutic environment that bespeaks ‘’wellness’’ at every turn.

---Our objective is to get the best from each resident as they are maintained in our hallowed halls. We realize that each patient/resident is equipped differently and brings his own set of needs and preferences with him, for better or for worse. He/she is pointed toward improving the quality of his/her life…no matter what that may be.

---It is understood and accepted that the staff and volunteers are here to best make that happen (for the resident/patient) in a way that brings results and that are agreed upon by the parties concerned. That includes the resident/patient himself unless a different course of action is in play (conservator, etc.)

---We understand and accept that a certain amount of funds are set aside for this purpose. The funding is used to create that aforementioned therapeutic environment.

---The purpose of this document is to clarify our purposes for being here in the first place and to make a harmonious environment through our interactions that has ''therapeutic'' as a common goal.

---I have been asked to write about the residents/patients for an upcoming history project our CEO is working on. Here is my fourth draft. (I think that it was suppose to be for 150 year celebration.)

---My hopes and dreams for the residents' is that their self-worth is realized. I think for some reason many were not encouraged when they should have been and hence are not living the life that is possible for them. Instead of seeing themselves as shining stars they have been living in the shadows never to reach their potential or even to come close. I feel that there is a great need for each resident to be heard and taken seriously, maybe for the first time...for them to begin to enjoy life and living. I, actually, think that this applies to all of us. I think that only then that their lives and hence our lives stand a chance in this ever more dismal landscape that we're seeing. Improve the life of a resident (or anyone in need) today...and really get to know him or her and why he or she has the needs and preferences he or she has. I think that you'll be eternally glad that you did. Remember that it is not up to one individual. it takes a village. We are ALL in this together!  Be Well.

---The power of NOT YET seems much less pressure making letting you know that even if you’re not quite there AS OF YET it is in your future. You are heading in the right direction. There is a learning curve AND you are on it.

MEETING HUMAN NEEDs

1.     HUMAN NEEDs (MASLOW HIERARCHY of NEEDs) – Being Appreciated, Being Accepted, Being Understood, Being Loved, Being Valued, Being Treated Kindly, Being Supported, Being Cared For, etc. These are the very needs we ALL have...including YOU + ME.

2.     WEST SIDE STORY (Officer Krupke) – Deprived and Depraved. If one is DEPRIVED of his needs being met…he acts DEPRAVED (negative in some way.) Argumentative to Violent. Nip it in the bud!



3.     The more deprived that one is in getting his/her HUMAN NEEDs met, the more depraved (negative) he/she will act. 

4.     The less deprived that one is in getting his/her HUMAN NEEDs met, the less depraved (negative) he/she will act. 

5.     All needs that someone may have can be traced back (root-cause) to his need for love and understanding, etc. ‘’Pay ATTENTION to me. Could be his/her need to be loved and accepted.’’
